Olivia is a Lecturer of Biomaterials Science at the School of Dental Sciences, University of Nairobi. She lectures both undergraduate and postgraduate dental students about Biomaterials Science, a dynamic field focusing on materials that form interfaces with living tissues and are used in a myriad of diagnostic and restorative procedures. Most of these materials are derived from metals, ceramics, polymers and composites. Olivia also has interests in preventive aspects in Primary Oral Healthcare because she feels strongly about disease prevention, especially in developing countries which cannot cope with the financial burden of providing curative services. She occasionally engages in part-time private practice.
She holds a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from University of Nairobi and a Master of Science in Dental Materials from University of London. She first joined the University of Nairobi in 2010 as a Tutorial Fellow. Prior to that she was a Dental Officer in the Ministry of Health, stationed at Yala Level IV Hospital within Siaya District, now Siaya County. While there, she worked closely with the Millennium Development Project, providing dental services at several far-flung health centres and dispensaries for under-privileged patients who could not easily access the referral hospital.
Olivia believes that Africa needs more youth to engage in dynamic thinking in order to overturn her fortunes for the better. She is married with two children, loves to spend time with family and friends and to try out new recipes.
