As our tenth cohort graduates, CARTA is thrilled to be hosting the inaugural CARTA Conference 2023, which will take place on September 14-15, 2023, at the School of Public Health Auditorium, University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.

This year’s conference is themed “Building Bridges: Strengthening Research Capacity for Sustainable Development in Africa,” reflecting our commitment to fostering collaboration, innovation, and long-term impact in the region.

The CARTA 2023 Conference will celebrate the exceptional work of the CARTA family. The conference provides a platform to showcase the work and innovations of the program, the CARTA early career researchers (ECRs), and partner institutions. It will also provide an opportunity to learn from our past work to inform the future of CARTA. 

The agenda will maximize engagement and knowledge-sharing and bring together fellows across all ten cohorts, facilitators, focal persons, individuals engaged in CARTA activities across partner institutions, funders, and other stakeholders engaged in capacity-strengthening initiatives on the continent. 

On the first day, we will have the Wits School of Public Health/CARTA Research Day, where CARTA ECRs will have the opportunity to present their research alongside the Wits research community. The conference will provide a unique platform for CARTA fellows to expand their networks. 

The second day focuses on the CARTA program, showcasing its interventions, approaches, innovations, and impact.

Wits School of Public Health/CARTA Research Day (September 14)

CARTA fellows and the Wits research community are invited to submit abstracts in any of the following five sub-themes: 

• Re-imagining Occupational and Environmental Health 
• Social and Commercial Determinants of Health 
• Population Health Perspectives of Communicable & non-Communicable Diseases 
• Re-imagining Health Systems for Resilience 
• Innovative Public Health Teaching and Research Methodologies
