Esther Karumi is a Pharmacist; and works as a lecturer in Pharmacognosy at the University of Nairobi’s School of Pharmacy. She is involved in research and teaching. She currently conducts lectures, tutorials and laboratory sessions with undergraduate and Masters pharmacy students; as well as undergraduate Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science and Technology students. She is also involved in mentoring students and supervising Masters students. She has supervised two masters students to completion. Esther also takes part in other institutional activities such as curriculum development and review. Besides teaching and research, she is involved in consultancy services namely, offering Drug Information services regarding Traditional medicine at Kenyatta National Hospital, consultancy service for herbalists at the University’s MitiShamba Drugs Research Center and Training in Malaria Case Management. Esther holds a Master of Science Degree in Pharmacognosy and Complementary Medicine and a Bachelor of Pharmacy from the University of Nairobi. She has previously worked in the Ministry of Health as a District Pharmacist and as a Hospital Pharmacist in various public hospitals in the country. She has also worked at a local Pharmaceutical company and a Community Pharmacy in Nairobi. Esther believes in universal quality healthcare and also that nature serves as a source of useful healthcare remedies. These sources have not been explored thus lots of research on medicines from nature is needed. She is currently pursuing her PhD studies in Pharmacognosy researching natural sources of medicines with potential in the management of non-communicable diseases.
